Lekki shooting: CNN rejects Lagos Judicial panel’s invitation

The Cable News Network, Inc. (CNN) has had a problem with the solicitation by the Lagos Judicial Panel of Inquiry and Restitution of Victims of SARS Related Abuses, for its group of correspondents to show up before it on Saturday, December 12, to give proof on their reportage of the #EndSARS Lekki shooting.

Review that the media house did a detailed investigation concerning the October 20 discharge occurrence at the Lekki tollgate and shared its discoveries in a two-section narrative delivered in November. In the reports, the media house claimed that the military did fire live ammunition at the #EndSARS protesters, a charge the Federal government and the Nigerian Army have reliably denied.

At the progressing board of request researching the October 20 occurrence, the media house was welcome to come and give proof on the discoveries of its investigation.

In a letter composed by its legal counselors, Messrs.Olumide Babalola LP, the global news outfit said the Panel needs locale to call its staff since they are not in Nigeria. The media house recorded the protest dated fourth December 2020 at the Tribunal on December 9, 2020.

The letter of objection reads in part 

โ€œSince the Objectors are not โ€œpersons in Nigeriaโ€ as envisaged by the provision of section 5(c) (of Tribunals Of Inquiry Law Of Lagos State, Cap. T6), then this Honourable Tribunal is, with respect, bereft of territorial jurisdiction to compel their attendance to give evidence before it.โ€

According to Babalola, the panel invited him into its Private Hearing Room this morning and subsequently excused CNN from further proceedings or appearing before the Panel.
